Just stumbled across your blog today and thought I'd comment on this post. Have you seen the Arcimoto? It wouldn't be a replacement for a family car, not enough room, but could definitely be a fully electric commuter car, then you could keep the Volvo around for hauling all the stuff but not need to drive it all the time. The Arcimoto cars were all designed in Eugene, Oregon too, not in Korea or Japan, and I've heard the company plans to keep their production in the Northwest. Don't quote me on that tho. ;)

Annette - as a PSE customer, if you purchase solar panels manufactured in WA state and are set up as a grid-tied system, you get paid $0.54/kWH as opposed to $0.15/kWH when you roll the meter backwards and feed the grid. The non-WA solar panels are slightly more efficient, but at least one of the panels produced in WA (can't remember the manufacturer at the moment) is the most durable / reliable on the market with regard to the certification torture test.

Hi Noelle! The cover crop was a mixed variety suited for fall planting. I can't remember the exact mix.

Annette, we'll do a post about solar options soon. There are some excellent incentives that are improving pay back periods here in WA.

Sandy that is awesome on the energy savings! What kind of solar system did you look at with a payback of 7 years? I would love to get something here. This place is not at all energy efficient but because of the design not much we can do (log home, no insulation opportunity).
